About the Mobile, Alabama Area

Full of history, culture, southern warmth and charm, Mobile and the surrounding communities provide all of the desired characteristics of small town life while still delivering the sophistication and vibrancy of a big city. Home to over 300,000, Mobile sits at the base of the Mobile River centrally located along the gulf coast, nestled with New Orleans and Gulf Port, MS to its west and the Florida coast to its east. While its streets are lined with century old oaks and homes, Mobile is definitely a city of the future.

Our economy is booming...

• In 2007, Mobile County, near the Saraland area, was just chosen the home for the $3.7 billion steel-making plant by the German company, ThyssenKrupp. It is projected that the steel plant will generate 29,000 construction jobs, 2,700 permanent jobs at the plant and another 38,000 to 52,000 jobs indirectly over the next 20 years. Mobile County is predicted to reap approximately 83% of the economic impact of this venture.

• Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008 for the four-track $624 million Alabama Motor sports Park and entertainment complex. When fully operational, the complex and related facilities are expected to provide 4,800 jobs.

• Standard Concrete is moving its headquarters from New Orleans to Mobile bringing approximately 135 corporate high paying jobs.

• A new container terminal is bringing an initial $83 million investment making Mobile a viable player in the container market.

• With 2 high profile government contracts under bid, the world is seeing Mobile as a new hub for military projects.

• Step back to a simpler time and discover the newly renovated Battle House Hotel. Originally built in 1852, its halls were once graced by American presidents and statesmen.

• 2007 also saw the completion of a grand five year project. The 35-story RSA Tower now holds the title for Alabama’s tallest office building.

• Mobile’s business environment is as progressive as it is diverse with national and international firms Aero Space Engineering, Degussa, Kimberly Clarke, EADS, Austal and USA Mitchell Cancer Research Institute to come.

Entertainment abounds with . . . .

• Numerous historical sites such as Oakleigh and The Bragg-Mitchell Mansions, Fort Conde & Fort Gaines, The USS Alabama Battleship and Air Museum and Bellingrath Gardens.

• Home to sandy white beaches, fresh delicious seafood, and Delta excursions.

• Mobile is not only recognized as celebrating the first-known American Mardi Gras celebration in 1703 (yes, even before New Orleans), but also as home to the "America's Family Mardi Gras" delighting both young and old from around town and across the nation. This annual magnificent celebration lasts for nearly two weeks and culminates on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent.

• Homeport to Carnival Cruise Lines.

• A stop on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the gulf area sports twenty-one world-class golf courses.

• Full of culture and arts, Mobile has the Opera, Symphony and Ballet, the Saenger Theatre, Imax & Exploreum, the Museum of Art, Museum of Mobile, and Mobile Arts Council.

• Home to the Minor League Mobile BayBears Baseball Team at Mobile’s very own Hank Aaron Stadium.

Mobile offers many opportunities in education. . .

• The public school system provides service to more than 65,000 children each year and has the state’s largest Advanced Placement Program.

• The Alabama School of Math and Science attracts some of the brightest high school students from around the state.

• The Regional School for the Deaf and Blind and Evans Special School offer services to special needs students.

• Mobile has over 40 private and denominational schools.

• Home to 6 colleges and universities, including Spring Hill College, one of the nations oldest Jesuit Institutions, and The University of South Alabama, with a wide range of studies including medicine.

Real Estate Tips
Buying Land and New Construction >New Homes

Buying a house that is under construction gives you the opportunity to customize your new home by adding special features to the basic home. When deciding on additional features, consider how they will affect the re-sale value of the home and whether these additions will over-improve your home.

Money spent to improve and modernize kitchens and bathrooms is almost always a good investment. Granite and corian counter tops, side-by-side refrigerators, tile flooring and whirlpool tubs are popular upgrades. If the builder's standard flooring for the living room, dining room or foyer is linoleum, changing to hardwood or tile will increase the resale value of the home. And even if you don't enjoy sitting around a roaring fireplace, the next owner may want one. If you plan to finish the basement later, you may want to "rough-in" the plumbing for a bath during the original construction. You should consider your own enjoyment--and what will increase the value of your home when you sell.
